e.l.f. - An Affordable Makeup Option Worth Considering

The amount of money spent on beauty products continues to rise. Many women feel that beauty products are a need rather than a want. And, for whatever reason, we often believe that expensive means better. That is false. There are products that I get at my local Walmart or Target that are just as effective as those that I purchase from Dillard’s or Nordstrom.

Regardless of the price point of a product, the most important things to focus on are – Is this product working for me? and Is it producing the results I need? I am going to do a few comparisons on beauty products to give you options and a new perspective regarding high-to-low price point brands. You never want to break the bank for your beauty needs, but you certainly want to look like you did.

First, let’s look at primers. Smashbox has an AHHH-MAZING primer called Photo Finish Foundation Primer. This particular primer is the company’s best-selling product. What I love about it is that it fills pores and lines and leaves a very smooth finish. It is lightweight and oil-free so any skin type can benefit from this product. It definitely is my “go-to” primer for myself and my clients. Okay, so the primer is $36.00. OUCH! I will admit that yes, it is worth it; however, if that is not in your budget, I have an alternative. Never go broke for beauty!

When the brand e.l.f. came out, I knew that it would take the beauty industry by storm. Their products are sold super-cheap, but don’t let the low price point fool you. Its products are comparable to department store brands. You can say they are a low-cost/high-quality cosmetic line that definitely has made a difference in how we view makeup. For instance, I recommend their Poreless Face Primer. The primer is only $6.00. That is a HUGE savings from Smashbox, however, I still believe that it is a quality product. The only downside of this product is that I would only use it on my clients with limited skin issues and little to no acne. Although it gets the job done, there are definitely some limitations, but I still believe in the product and suggest that you at least try it and keep an open mind.

Let’s next turn our attention to eye product. There is a great quote that is so true -- never ask a woman with a winged eye line why she is late (LOL). Although there is nothing more classic than a winged eyeliner or cat eye, there is nothing harder to get even, so it is imperative to have the right product to make that happen. It’s no secret that my go-to makeup line is MAC. Yes, I am married to MAC! Their gel eyeliner is EVERYTHING! It’s smooth and silky, which helps go on easy. The colors are so rich that they don't fade out and it is long wearing. When you are trying to do the perfect winged eye, you must have a product that will work with you and not against you. I believe that is why I love it so much because the formula is so easy to work with. Yes it is $17.00, which is not the best price. A strong second is e.l.f.'s low cost gel liner at $3.00. The formula is very creamy, which also helps when applying. I don’t feel that the color is as a strong once it is on, but that is not the worst thing in the world. It still gets the job done.

Last, but not least, is a discussion regarding makeup brushes. These items may perhaps be the most important thing in your makeup bag. Good brushes contribute to a flawless canvas.

The Bobbi Brown brush set is, in my opinion, one of the best. I love the fact that they last forever (or so it seems). As much as I wash them and use them, the quality is still there. The 15-set collection includes everything you ever would want and need to have. The bristles are ultra soft and allows precise and easy application. The prices aren’t so easy at $150.00, but it truly is an investment.

The e.l.f. Beautifully Precise Brush Collection will run you $74.00; you can’t beat this price and they blend the makeup with a great flawless finish, but you will not have them forever. Again, that isn’t the worst thing in life. I typically start my clients who are new to makeup with these brushes. If you need to buy brushes, start here and work your way up.
