As we begin a new year, traditionally we start off with New Year’s resolutions or new goals; a new year seen as a fresh start and opportunity to create a “new me.” Although optimistic, resolutions typically don't last long. For example, why is it that during the month of January the gym is full of people who are determined to have a new body, but by mid-February the gym is half empty? Why can’t we keep our commitments and finish strong until December? Here are my thoughts as to why:
A big goal means a big commitment. For instance, if you want to loose 100 pounds but the weight comes off slowly, you tend to want to give up. We are in the “get it right now” mentality so anything that takes too long tends to be something we're reluctant to commit to. Why not break down your goals and celebrate each accomplishment? Goals are a measurement of progress, so it is easier to measure your goals by smaller increments. For example, instead of taking on 100 pounds all at once, make your goal to lose three pounds a week until you get to the 100 pounds. Breaking it down helps you to not feel so overwhelmed by taking on a HUGE commitment.
Allowing failure to paralyze you.
You must remember failure is ONLY an event in your life. It doesn’t define who you are or speak to your destiny. Learn from your failure and don’t allow it to stop you. The process to your destination may include detours (i.e., failed attempts), but if you don’t quit, you'll get there. If you fail at something, learn from it, grow from it and let it be a stepping stone to your success.
Having no vision.
Vision is seeing something in a dream. If you can dream it, you can believe it. I have often said that your dreams are your purpose speaking to you. And, we know that purpose is the reason why you were put on this earth – your calling in life. Without vision there is no focus, goals, or commitment. Vision allows you to see where you are going – your destiny.
Allowing fear to stop you.
Fear can paralyze you and cause you to give up. Fear has the ability to be so powerful that it can stop you from moving forward. Fear is the number one enemy to your dreams, goals, and vision. Fear only lies to you and tries to manipulate you from not reaching your fullest potential. Faith overcomes fear.
I hope these points will help you identify “why” you are not reaching your goals and provide a few tools for how to overcome mental and emotional obstacles. Make 2017 a year of accomplishments! You are stronger than you think. You can do this – you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Yes, there will be days that will be hard, but take a moment to inhale and exhale, and just don’t quit. Stay focused on your goals until you see the manifestation of your dream. Quitting is easy, but enduring until the end takes perseverance, tenacity, and strength.
I'll conclude with a great quote that you can use as your daily motivator: “Focus on your goal. Don’t look any direction but ahead.”
Reach for the stars because that is where you are headed! Blessings!
